Wainwright's Lake District works go under the hammer
Sixty years after fell walker Alfred Wainwright published his first guide to the Lake District, a large collection of his work has gone under the hammer.
Rare first editions of his sketchbooks, original drawings and letters have been sold at auction in Cockermouth.
The 19 lots, belonging to a private seller, went for a total of £4,795.
One of the original sketches, of Gimmer Crag, had been expected to sell for between £300 and £500, but raised almost £1,000.
Wainwright, who died in 1991 at the age of 84, began his pictorial guides to satisfy his own interest and love of the Lakes, but they turned into bestsellers.
