A paraglider has been seriously injured in a crash in the Lake District fells.

The pilot, thought to be in his 50s and from the Penrith area, was airlifted to hospital after the crash at Howgills, near Kirkby Stephen, at about 12:15 BST.

A spokesman for the Great North Air Ambulance Service said medics had to cut the pilot free before they could treat him.

He was flown to the James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.
