A 25-mile stretch of the M6 in Cumbria was closed for several hours after a crane caught fire.

Both carriageways were closed between Junction 36 and Junction 39 as a precaution due to smoke from the burning 140-tonne crane.

No-one was reported injured and all but one northbound lane was reopened by late afternoon on Thursday.

The remaining lane which suffered the most damage was due to be resurfaced and open again by Friday.
