The body of a missing boy may have been found in a van pulled from the River Derwent in Derbyshire, police have said.

The search for 14-year-old Patrick Piggott, from Alvaston, started on Sunday evening.

Derbyshire Police pulled the Ford Escort van from the river in Derby on Monday afternoon, but would not confirm the identity of the person inside it.

A Derby man, aged 19, has been arrested in connection with the theft of a van.

The body is expected to be identified later on Monday evening or Tuesday morning.

Extremely concerned

Patrick's family have been told of the discovery and officers are offering them support.

The teenager's family said earlier that they were extremely concerned for his safety and appealed to anyone who knew where he was or had seen him since Sunday morning to contact them.

Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the van before it plunged into the river.

Anyone who has any information is asked to contact Derbyshire Police.
