Drivers caught in Derbyshire safety blitz

Police caught 76 people flouting the law during a road safety campaign in a Derby suburb.

The operation run by the county's casualty reduction and enforcement support team (CREST) targeted drivers on the A52 in Mackworth on Tuesday.

Officers said 33 of those stopped were fined for not wearing a seatbelt.

A further 16 motorists were caught using a mobile phone while driving. One driver was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon.

Seven drivers faced action for illegally tinted windows, while 17 vehicles were found to have defects.

Chris Turner, of the Mackworth Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "Residents often tell us their concerns about traffic issues such as unsafe driving and speeding.

"The operation with CREST focuses on both enforcement and driver education, which will help to keep the roads safe for all users in the area."
