Sex attack on woman, 19, in Derby city centre

A 19-year-old woman has been sexually assaulted after an evening out with friends in Derby city centre.

She became separated from the group late in the evening and was approached by a man in Ashbourne Road asking if she had any cigarettes, police said.

He pulled the woman into a side street, attacked her and then he walked off. The victim went home and rang the police at about 0300 BST.

The attacker is described as being in his 30s with short dark brown hair.

Detectives want to speak to anyone who may know anything about the assault or who may have heard screaming in the Ashbourne Road area early on Friday morning.

Det Insp Tim Cadman said: "It is very unusual for women to be attacked in this way by strangers and we are taking the matter very seriously.

"As a precaution I would advise all young women to take extra care of themselves when moving around the city at night.

"Ideally people should take a taxi home after a night out or walk with someone they know."
