Patrols increased around Derbyshire schools

Police have increased patrols after several reports of children being approached by a man in Derbyshire.

In the latest incident, a 11-year-old girl said she was pushed over by a man who told her to get in his van in Alvaston on Tuesday.

He punched her arm when she refused to go with him and drove off in the direction of Allenton.

The incidents have occurred in the Derby and Erewash areas over the past two weeks.

Patrols increased

Det Supt Debbie Platt said: "We don't want to cause undue alarm but we all need to do everything we can to keep children safe.

"We are aware that unsubstantiated rumours of child abductions are circulating on social networking websites and via text messages. We are working to clarify what is true and what is speculation.

"Children have given us a variety of different descriptions of both the van used and the man involved but we are taking all these allegations seriously."

She said patrols were being increased around schools in the areas as a precaution.
