Officers step up festive patrols in Chesterfield

Police patrols in part of Derbyshire are being stepped up to target purse thefts and retail crime during the festive period.

Police and Community Support Officers in Chesterfield will focus on the town centre during Christmas and New Year periods.

The patrols are being carried out as part of Operation Pearl, a seasonal initiative to tackle crime.

Officers will also patrol car parks to prevent thefts from vehicles.

Sgt Nick Booth of Derbyshire Police said: "Traditionally around this time of year the number of purse and shop thefts increase as the town becomes busier and people become less vigilant with their belongings.

"Our aim is to continue to provide reassurance to shoppers and businesses within the Chesterfield area, as well as prosecuting those individuals who steal and cause damage."
