Gun found in Chaddesden woods by metal detector girl
A handgun has been found buried in woods by a girl testing a metal detector she got for Christmas.
The firearm was found by the teenager and her family in Chaddesden Wood Nature Reserve, Derby, on Monday.
Forensic checks have been carried out and the weapon has now been forwarded for a specialist ballistics examination.
Police have appealed for anyone who has information about the weapon to contact them.
Ch Insp Tracey Harrison said: "A search of the area has been carried out and forensic officers have attended the scene.
"The area is a popular walk for local dog owners and I would appeal for any information about the weapon or anyone seen in the area recently that may have looked suspicious or out of place."
