About £7m is to be spent protecting villages in south Derbyshire from flooding.

The Environment Agency scheme will involve raising walls, embankments and roads at Hatton, Scropton and Egginton.

Work on the project, designed to benefit about 2,000 properties and businesses near the River Dove, is scheduled to begin in summer 2012.

Food company Nestle, which has a factory at nearby Tutbury, is contributing £1.65m.

The Environment Agency said it had received "excellent local support" for the project during a "wide consultation".

It said it would now start working on detailed plans for the scheme.
