The search for a Derbyshire man, missing since his boat sank in heavy seas between England and France, has been called off.

Jeffrey Clare from Draycott was on the tugboat Aquarius when it started taking on water about 45 miles off the Lizard in Cornwall on Monday morning.

The 66-year-old's wife Val said their family was grateful for the efforts by search and rescue teams.

Two other crew members aboard at the time were taken to safety.

Falmouth Coastguard said a French helicopter airlifted the men from a life raft to hospital.

The Aquarius, believed to be British registered, was on its way from La Coruna in northern Spain to Plymouth.

Mrs Clare said: "We have been informed that the search for Jeff has been called off and we would like to thank everyone involved."
