A man has been jailed for six years for stabbing his girlfriend to death after an argument.

Angela Ward, 27, died in hospital after police found her injured in a flat complex in Ilkeston, Derbyshire.

Ian Meakin, 49, had been charged with Miss Ward's murder but a judge at Nottingham Crown Court accepted his guilty plea to manslaughter.

Meakin told police Miss Ward had threatened him with two knives after a drinking session in Ilkeston on 4 May.

Miss Ward suffered two stab wounds and died in Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham, shortly afterwards.

Meakin was arrested at the scene.

He admitted manslaughter at a hearing earlier this month.

Det Ch Insp Dave Cox from East Midlands Special Operations Unit said: "There is no doubt in my mind that he could have prevented this from happening by simply walking away.

"He decided to be quite spiteful in his response and we are left in a situation where Angela has sadly died."
