Murder probe after Derby street attack

A 71-year-old man who was attacked in the street in Derby has died.

Melvyn Hargreaves was assaulted at the junction of Mercian Way and Gerard Street shortly after midnight on Friday while walking a dog with a friend.

Samuel Watts, 22, has appeared at the city's magistrates court charged with causing grievous bodily harm and was remanded in custody to appear at Derby Crown Court on Monday 19 January.

A murder inquiry has been launched following the death of Mr Hargreaves.

The pensioner, of Rosengrave Street, Derby, died earlier on Monday at the Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham, where he was being treated for head injuries.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out on Tuesday, Derbyshire Police said.

Mr Watts, of Forman Street, Derby, was arrested on Friday and charged on Sunday.
