Child and man rescued off the coast of Sidmouth

Two people were rescued in Devon after getting caught in a rip current.

The rescue at Sidmouth involved a coastguard helicopter from Portland, the independent Sidmouth lifeboat, Beer coastguard team and a kayaker.

It was initially reported that eight people were in trouble, but six managed to swim ashore unaided.

A 56-year-old man and a child were rescued by the lifeboat crew who swam with them to the shore. The man was treated for slight hypothermia.

The group had been near Chit Rocks when they were pulled out to sea.
