Man injured during stag party coasteering trip in Devon

An Exeter man has been rescued after hurting himself coasteering during a stag event.

The man aggravated an old injury. Coasteering involves cliff climbing, jumping into the sea and swimming.

A spokeswoman for Brixham Coastguards said he was rescued at Redgate beach, in the Babbacombe part of Torquay, at lunchtime.

A coastguard helicopter winched the man to safety and he was taken to hospital in Torbay - his condition is not known.

Fiona Iris, Brixham Coastguard watch officer, said: "We are not sure whether the man slipped or landed awkwardly but he surfaced from the water in excruciating pain.

"The area was too difficult for lifeboats, land and air ambulances to access so a coastguard helicopter was scrambled."
