Torbay students rewarded for good school attendance

Schoolchildren in part of Devon are being incentivised to attend school.

The Every School Day Matters campaign in Torbay is rewarding students who have good attendance or who improve their attendance record.

Students are rewarded with prizes such as tickets to Paignton Zoo, supermarket vouchers and certificates.

Torbay has the worst school attendance figures in Devon, with 6.28% of school lessons missed, according to the Department of Education.

Jane English, Joint Head of School Leadership at Torbay Council and Principal of Paignton Community and Sports College, said: "If people are going to perform well at school they need to be in and they need to be in as much as possible.

"When I was in school there was no such thing as incentives or rewards But [in] the culture we live in today, people respond particularly well to rewards."

The Every School Day Matters scheme will run until July 2011, when it will be reviewed.
