Onlooker shines laser into eyes of man on roof in Devon

A man whom police spent hours talking down from a roof in Torquay was taunted by people and had a laser pen shone in his eyes, it has been revealed.

Police said they had to move a cordon several times during negotiations due to actions of people in the crowd.

The Victoria Road incident on Tuesday ended when the man, 30, of Torquay, came down after seven hours.

A 22-year-old man who climbed on to the roof during negotiations was arrested and later cautioned for obstruction.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said there had been concerns that the first man, who had been in an agitated state, would fall and seriously injure himself.

The man, who has not been named, was taken to Torbay District Hospital for treatment and assessment.

It is not known why he was on the roof.
