A man has been arrested after a fatal car crash in Torquay.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the accident happened on Newton Road, near Torre railway station just before midnight.

A 19-year-old local woman, who police believe was a passenger in the car, suffered fatal injuries.

The driver, who was treated at the scene for minor injuries, was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has been released on police bail until 15 March.

The road, which was closed overnight, has been partially reopened with police directing traffic while crash investigators complete their work.
