Devon mothers welcome new year baby arrivals

The new year brought long-awaited and welcome arrivals to at least three new mothers in Devon.

Two baby girls were born within the first three hours of 2011 at Derriford Hospital's maternity unit in Plymouth.

At Torbay Hospital the first baby of the year was a boy who put in a surprise appearance at 0240 GMT - a week before he was expected.

His mother, Sarah Heatherington, said giving birth to baby William had made it the best new year ever.

"Out of all the new years I've had, this one has been absolutely the best," she said. "I'm a very lucky, very proud mum."
