Wembury swimmers take the plunge for charity

More than 100 people braved the elements to celebrate New Year's Day with a dip in the sea in Devon.

The brave swimmers at Wembury were raising money for the Shekinah Mission - a local homeless charity.

Organiser Terry Clarke said the swim had now become an annual event, with more people taking part each year.

"The first year there was just me and my daughter in the sea - with about 20 people supporting us," he said.

Lifeguards and St John Ambulance were on duty to ensure everyone stayed, but despite some complaints about the water being "a little chilly", the event was deemed a resounding success.

It is the seventh year the event has taken place and Mr Clarke said he was confident even more swimmers would take the plunge next year.
