Police investigating a rape in Plymouth on New Year's Day have issued a more detailed description of a suspect.

A woman was injured in the attack in the Mutley area of the city in the early hours of 1 January.

Detectives have studied CCTV footage of a man they would like to speak to. He is described as dark-skinned, slim, aged 20 to 25, and 5ft 5in (1.65m).

He also had long hair in a corn-braid style. The victim's Blackberry mobile phone was also missing, officers added.

Police warning

The victim, who had been celebrating New Year with friends, was attacked in College Lane at 0415 GMT.

The attacker, who was wearing a black hooded top, told his victim he had a knife.

After the attack he fled towards North Hill and the city centre.

Police say the suspect's top may have had some red trim around the hood and a small red logo on the left side of the chest.

Det Insp Costa Nassaris said: "We now know that the victim's mobile phone is missing.

"It is a Blackberry Curve and we would like to hear from anyone who has been offered one in the Plymouth area."

Det Insp Nassaris said that while this type of crime was "very rare in Plymouth", people should nevertheless take precautions with their own personal safety.

He said: "Avoid poorly lit, quiet areas when it's dark and be vigilant. If you see someone acting suspiciously call the police straight away."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
