Man charged with arson over Bideford Tantons Hotel fire

A 63-year-old man from Kent arrested after a fire at a hotel in north Devon hotel has been charged with committing arson with intent to endanger life.

More than 50 guests fled the building after fire broke out at Tantons Hotel in Bideford on Tuesday morning.

Sixty firefighters and 11 fire engines were used to tackle the blaze, which was in a single room on the top floor.

The man was due to appear before magistrates in Barnstaple on Thursday, police said.

A coach party of guests who had been staying at the hotel have returned to their homes in East Anglia.
