William is Derriford Hospital first new year baby
A baby boy, born 68 minutes into the new year, was the first 2012 delivery for midwives at the South West's biggest hospital.
William Dunning, born at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, Devon, at 01:08 GMT, is the first child of Shelley Lane and Giles Dunning from Plympton.
"It was fun and games getting him here, but we're absolutely delighted", Mr Dunning told BBC News.
The hospital's first baby girl - Sophie Higgins - arrived at 04:50 GMT.
Baby William weighed in at 8lb 2ox (3.7kg), while Sophie tipped the scales at 4lb 13oz (2.2kg).
Mr Dunning, 29, praised the midwives and staff at the hospital.
"It was a long labour for Shelley - she was admitted early on Saturday morning and William didn't arrive until just after one this morning - and the staff did a brilliant job so Shelley could have a natural delivery.
"Even as it was approaching midnight, it hadn't really occurred to us that William would be a New Year's Day baby... he was due on the 18 December, so we're just delighted he's here safe and healthy.
At the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, midwives delivered the first twins of the new year about 04:00 GMT.
The twin boys, who were premature, are being cared for in the hospital's neo-natal intensive care unit, but are said to be doing well.
