A link road has been given planning approval in an attempt to cut congestion and improve air quality in Crediton.

Devon County Council (DCC) approved the 760m (2,500ft) road linking Wellpark roundabout on the A377 to Marsh Lane and the Lords Meadow Industrial Estate.

It is hoped the road, costing £7.75m, will be ready to use by 2015.

The scheme is subject to legal agreements being secured for additional landscaping.

DCC said the scheme would "reduce congestion and improve air quality" along Exeter Road, Charlotte Street, East Street and Mill Street; as well as "supporting economic growth by improving accessibility to the Lords Meadow Industrial Estate".

Councillor Stuart Hughes said: "It also means the road network will be more resilient so the town will no longer be hostage to any blockage or closure of Exeter Road."
