Work has started on a new visitor centre for a Devon canal.

The centre will provide heritage and wildlife information about the 11-mile (18km) Grand Western Canal in Tiverton.

It is hoped construction will be completed in May, to replace the current temporary structure.

The project received £240,000 from Devon County Council as part of Investing in Devon, a scheme which has contributed to a variety of projects following the sale of Exeter Airport.

Des Hannon from the council said: "This centre will explain our heritage to visitors. It will also help to bring them to our town and keep them longer."
