Legal threat over sheep worrying at Northam Burrows

Police have warned dog owners they could be prosecuted if their pets worry ponies and sheep at a North Devon Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

Torridge District Council said at least two sheep have had to be put down this year on Northam Burrows near Westward Ho! beach.

Park rangers have also reported dogs chasing horses and remote controlled cars being driven at livestock.

Northam Burrows is part of the United Nations Biosphere reserve.

Pc Dick Rowlands said: "Dog owners must take notice that it is a criminal offence to allow a dog to attack or chase livestock and dogs must be kept on a lead when they are in the vicinity of such animals.

"The council's environmental protection unit works closely with the police when such offences are reported."
