Two bodies have been found in a Grade II listed gatehouse in north Devon which caught fire.

Fire crews were called to Meadow Park Lodge, in Filleigh, near South Molton, at about 02:30 BST.

At its peak, the blaze - in the main gatehouse of the Castle Hill Estate - was tackled by three crews.

Police said the bodies had been removed from the building and were to be taken to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

The first body was found on Monday morning. The second body was found during the afternoon.

Building unsafe

Next of kin had been informed and post-mortem examinations would take place on Tuesday, police added.

Lady Arran, who owns the Castle Hill Estate, said she was devastated at what had happened.

A couple, who were believed to be in their 60s, had been living in the house for about eight years, she said.

Fire crews have remained at the scene throughout the day.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the building was unsafe and the cause of the blaze was currently unknown.

Police said officers and fire service staff had begun an investigation to establish the cause, but added that there was "nothing at this stage to suggest this is a crime scene".
