Devon jobless figures more than 19,000

More than 19,200 people were out of work and claiming jobseeker's allowance in Devon in July, official figures say.

The Office for National Statistics said the 19,212 included 9,271 people in the Devon county area, 6,514 in Plymouth's unitary area and 3,427 in Torbay.

Against a static national claimant count of 3.9%, Torbay had the highest rate in the county of 4.3%, against Plymouth's 3.7% and Devon's 2%.

The figures show a decrease from 19,958 in May.

Nationwide unemployment fell to 8.0%, down from 8.2% in the previous quarter.
