Bomb disposal experts have removed a rocket propelled mortar from a skip at a recycling centre in Devon.

A Royal Navy bomb disposal team was called to Totnes Recycling Centre and removed the mortar in a bomb-proof container for further investigation.

A spokesman from the Royal Navy said the mortar was inactive and it was unclear where it had come from.

The centre, owned by Devon County Council, was evacuated and closed for more than an hour on Monday.

A spokesperson from the council said people should contact the police or coastguard for advice if they need to dispose of potentially hazardous items.
