St Boniface ex-head Peter Eccles job offer withdrawn

An ex-head of a Catholic school who had an "inappropriate relationship" has had a new job offer withdrawn.

Peter Eccles resigned from St Boniface's Catholic College in June after an investigation found he had brought the school into disrepute.

A conditional offer for the position of head teacher at Walney School in Barrow, Cumbria, has been revoked by its board of governors.

The board said continuing with the appointment was an "unacceptable risk".

Dennis Laird, chair of governors, said Mr Eccles was "highly recommended" by the governing body at St Boniface, but media coverage of his relationship with a female member of staff had been damaging.

A statement on the school's website said: "Over the past weeks information about Mr Eccles has been circulating in the press and local community.

"Whilst making no personal judgements whatsoever, governors considered that this information had already had a negative impact on the confidence of parents and the local community.

"In view of this, continuing with Mr Eccles' appointment presented an unacceptable risk of further undermining and damaging confidence in the school."
