A vicar charged with drinking and driving and assaulting a woman has failed to appear in court.

The Reverend David Davies failed to appear before Torquay magistrates and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Solicitor Alan Parsons told magistrates Mr Davies, 50, was fit to appear in court but handed in a letter to excuse his absence from the hearing.

When magistrates asked Mr Parsons if he knew where Mr Davies was he replied: "No."

Mr Davies has previously been relieved of his duties as the parish priest in Cockington, Devon.

No pleas were entered in relation to the offences, which are alleged to have taken place on 4 November 2014.
