Two men accused of murdering a builder in an axe attack in Plymouth have been remanded in custody by magistrates.

Tanis Bhandari, 27, was killed near the King's Arms pub in Tamerton Foliot in the early hours of New Year's Day.

Ryan Williams, 21, of Landulph Gardens, St Budeaux, and Donald Pemberton, 20, of Haydon Grove, also in St Budeaux, appeared before Plymouth magistrates.

The men - also charged with possessing an axe and knife in public - are due before Exeter Crown Court on Wednesday.

Four other men were seriously injured near the pub.

A 21-year-old is said to be in a critical but stable condition in hospital while the others have been discharged.

Police were called to the King's Arms at about 01:30 GMT.

An inquest into Mr Bhandari's death was opened and adjourned on Monday.

It heard that he died "from a stab wound to the back of his chest", according to the coroner's office.
