Two men accused of murdering a builder in an axe attack in Plymouth have appeared before Exeter Crown Court.

Tanis Bhandari, 27, was killed in the early hours of New Year's Day near the King's Arms pub in Tamerton Foliot.

Donald Pemberton, 20, of Haydon Grove, St Budeaux, and Ryan Williams, 21, of Landulph Gardens, also in St Budeaux, appeared via video link.

Judge Frances Gilbert adjourned the hearing until 5 February, in Plymouth or Exeter. The pair remain in custody.

The men have also been charged with possessing an axe and knife in public.

Police were called to the King's Arms at about 01:30 GMT on 1 January.

Four other men were seriously injured near the pub.

A 21-year-old was said to be in a critical but stable condition in hospital while the others were later discharged.

An inquest into Mr Bhandari's death was opened and adjourned on Monday.

It heard that he died "from a stab wound to the back of his chest", according to the coroner's office.
