Bournemouth A338 40 mph road speed restriction extended

A speed restriction trial on a Dorset road will be extended by six months.

The temporary 40mph limit on the A338 Wessex Way, Bournemouth, between County Gates and the approach to St Paul's Roundabout, has been hailed a success.

But Bournemouth Council said it wanted to collect more data before a final decision was taken.

The council could adopt a 40mph limit on a permanent basis or revert back to 50mph after data is analysed in January 2011.

It could also decide to continue with the 40mph limit under an experimental order.

Councillor Michael Filer, cabinet member for environment and transport, said current data could not be regarded as conclusive.

"This decision has not been taken lightly but has been made in order that we can make the most informed conclusions, taking into account all the public feedback and accident and traffic data."
