Can crushers are to be installed on a Dorset beach to help cut the amount of litter.

Units will be placed along Poole's Blue Flag beaches to encourage visitors to recycle their drinks cans in a "new way", Borough of Poole council said.

Staff will collect the crushed cans and send them to be recycled into new ones.

Poole has a target to reduce its carbon emissions by 25% by 2013. The council said recycling one tonne of aluminium saved nine tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Councillor Don Collier, cabinet portfolio holder for the environment, said: "The residents of Poole have been recycling drinks cans, along with other recyclables, for many years. We are really excited that visitors to our Blue Flag beaches will be able to recycle cans in an interesting new way."
