Ambulance crash closes Dorset carriageway

A busy dual carriageway in Dorset had to be closed after an ambulance was involved in a crash with a 4x4 vehicle.

The accident happened on the eastbound carriageway of the A31 near Wimborne at about 1245 GMT.

The ambulance was responding to a 999 call when it collided with the 4x4 and ended up in a ditch, police said.

The road was closed in both directions between the Canford Bottom and the Merley Bird Gardens roundabouts to allow the air ambulance to land.

Dorset Police said those involved in the accident sustained only minor injuries.

The road was reopened shortly before 1430 GMT.

Officers said the road would be temporarily closed again during the afternoon to allow recovery of the ambulance.
