The remains of an elderly man have been found by walkers in Dorset.

The discovery was made on Friday afternoon on Stoborough Heath, near Wareham.

Dorset Police said the remains appeared to be those of Michael Laing, from Harman's Cross, who was reported missing in August 2009, aged 74.

Officers said no formal identification had been made but Mr Laing's family had been informed. Her Majesty's Coroner has also been notified.

Mr Laing was last seen eating an ice cream in South Street, Wareham, on 7 August 2009. His car was discovered nearby, prompting a widespread search.
