Permanent Dorchester park and ride site planned

A new permanent park and ride site has been proposed for a Dorset town.

The popularity of a temporary site at Dorchester Football Crown has led to the idea, West Dorset council said.

The preferred site would be based at Monkey's Jump, with a capacity of up to 950 vehicles, with a second option south of Stadium Roundabout.

A consultation is under way until 28 April before councillors make a final decision. If approved, a site could open in late 2013.

The plans are part of the council's long-term strategy to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality by encouraging commuters and other long stay visitors to park on the edge of town.

A study looked into 20 possible sites and identified the two sites as the best options.

Councillor Robert Gould, council leader, said: "We're really pleased with the success of the temporary service and want to make sure we can keep up with the increasing demand for spaces.

"The proposed new scheme would be better for commuters and better for local businesses."
