Canford Heath suspicious fire witness sought

A fire that destroyed an area of heathland behind a Dorset school was believed to have been started deliberately.

The fire, in the Canford Heath area of Poole, affected a 300 sq m (3,230 sq ft) area behind Haymoor Middle School on Monday night.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and no-one was hurt.

Police want to speak with a "vital" witness who told fire officers she knew who was responsible but left the scene.

Every year dozens of heath fires affect the south Dorset area.

'Contact urgently'

Pc Dave Street, of Dorset Police, said: "I understand that when Dorset Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene a woman told fire officers that she knew who was responsible for the blaze.

"She was asked to remain at the scene and talk to the police, but she left before this was possible.

"I would ask her to contact me urgently - it's important that I find out exactly what happened.

"I am also appealing for witnesses, and anyone with any information about those responsible, to contact us as soon as possible."
