New restrictions for outdoor dining and drinking at cafes and bars in a seaside Dorset resort have been approved.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council's policy means venues in Weymouth need a new licence to serve outside before 08:00 and after 23:00.

The council said applications for later licences will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The rule comes in from August, when the town will be hosting the Olympic sailing events.

Sue Moore, head of business licensing at the council, said: "Applications outside those times will be considered... according to the type of business, the size of the area, the likely effect on local residents and nearby properties.

"The policy has been formulated in an endeavour to strike a balance between the commercial desires [and] needs of business and the health [and] wellbeing of residents, holidaymakers and other interested parties."

She added that licensees wishing to have later licences will be expected to "manage the outside area as robustly as they manage their indoor space".
