Bournemouth block of flats evacuated after fire

Up to 20 people had to be led to safety after a fire at a block of flats in Bournemouth.

Firefighters were called to a ground floor flat in the building in Maderia Road at 23:30 BST on Thursday after smoke triggered the fire alarms.

An elderly couple from the neighbouring flat were rescued by officers and treated by ambulance crews.

The occupant of the flat was not at home, but the rest of the block was evacuated until the fire was put out.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but is thought to have been caused by an electrical fault.

Fire Investigation officer, Clem Stanley said: "This was an accidental fire believed to have been caused by a small, recently purchased computer item which was left on standby."
