Diver off Jurassic Coast airlifted after suffering the bends

A diver off Dorset's Jurassic Coast has been airlifted to hospital with a suspected case of the bends.

The man in his 60s showed symptoms of decompression sickness after making a rapid ascent from the seabed to a dive boat near West Bay.

He was airlifted to Poole Hospital by the coastguard helicopter.

A coastguard spokesman said he was being treated by a specialist dive doctor and was expected to be admitted to the recompression chamber in Poole.

Decompression sickness is caused by dissolved gases forming bubbles inside the body.

Symptoms include joint pain in the arms and legs, rashes and itching of the skin.
