Hundreds of homes were left without power and road and train travel disrupted after storms hit Dorset.

Southern Electric Power Distribution (SEPD) said high winds had brought down power lines, initially knocking out supplies to 1,200 properties.

The majority of properties affected were in the Charminster, Wimborne and Poole areas. SEPD said all but a "small number" of customers were reconnected.

Flooding has also caused disruption and some roads are blocked by fallen trees.

A gust of 75mph was recorded overnight in Portland while Bournemouth Airport saw winds of up to 60mph.

Floodwater rescue

The London Waterloo line at Hinton Admiral was blocked during the morning because of overnight flooding.

Weymouth bound trains have also not been able to stop at Hamworthy due to flooding.

Dorset Police said the high winds had brought down dozens of trees, causing numerous roads to be blocked.

Several drivers also became stranded in flood water.

At East Orchard near Sturminster Newton two people had to be taken to safety in an inflatable boat from waist-deep water by fire crews after their vehicle became stranded.

In Corfe Mullen, a man was rescued by Dorset Fire and Rescue Service from floodwater after he became stuck in his car in Candys Lane.

Fire crews also rescued a driver who became stranded in flood water on the A37 near Dorchester.

A Met Office "be aware" weather warning remains in place for rain and high winds, with gusts of up to 80mph possible in coastal areas.

At the scene, BBC reporter Simon Clemison last night in Weymouth

"I'm standing well away from the water's edge and I'm still getting blown about quite a bit.

"The waves coming in from far out at sea are not as big as they were in the winter storms last year, the tides not as high but the gusts are on a similar scale."
