Driver jailed for 'misted windscreen' death in Essex

A driver who hit and killed a man because he could not see through his misted windscreen has been given a 14-month suspended jail term.

Leonard Johnson, 56, of Overton Road, Benfleet, was struck by Kenneth Bush's Mazda 626 in the town's High Street in November and died nine days later.

Bush, 63, of Church Road, Benfleet, admitted causing death by careless driving at Basildon Crown Court.

He was also given 150 hours community service and a one-year driving ban.

Speaking after the case, Insp Dick Thomas said: "This was a tragic, avoidable road death because evidence gathered during this investigation showed that Kenneth Bush had failed to demist his car's windows before setting off for work on that cold November morning.

"Had he taken the time to make sure he could see clearly out of all windows Mr Johnson could have been alive today."
