Essex Council proposes cut in redundancy pay

An Essex council has proposed to cut the pay-out staff receive when made redundant.

Tendring District Council pays more than double the rate required by law to people who lose their jobs.

The human resources committee agreed to cut redundancy pay to one-and-a-half times the legal minimum at a meeting on Thursday.

The union Unison said it disagreed with "any proposal to reduce the current level of redundancy payments".

The proposals will now go to a full council meeting for final approval.

Anyone who is made redundant is entitled to a statutory pay-out based on age and length of service.
