Man bailed over pedestrian death in Southend

A 34-year-old van driver has been arrested and bailed on suspicion of causing the death of a pedestrian by careless driving in Essex.

Raja Khan, 60, from Earls Hall Avenue, Southend, was crossing Victoria Avenue in the town on Thursday afternoon when he was struck by a white van.

He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

The driver of the Mercedes Sprinter is from east London, police said. They are still keen to speak to witnesses.

The arrested man is due to return to police in October.
