Man arrested over damage to bridge in Essex

A 28-year-old lorry driver has been arrested in Suffolk after a vehicle struck a bridge on the A120 in Essex.

Police were called on Friday evening after a motorist reported a Mercedes lorry carrying an excavator had struck a road bridge near Elmstead.

Concrete fell on to the road but the driver of the lorry continued on towards the A12 towards Ipswich.

The A120 westbound carriageway was shut, diversions put in place and a structural engineer was called.

The damage was assessed and the bridge was declared safe, the debris was cleared and the road block lifted just after 2200 GMT.

Police arrested a man from Colchester for driving without due care and attention.

He was released on bail until 4 January 2011 while officers continue to investigate the incident.

Any witnesses are asked to contact Essex Police.
