A gang of four masked men, armed with guns and knives, assaulted a man in his Essex home and stole several thousand pounds from a safe.

The men, three black and one white, raided the house in Nursery Road, Loughton, on Sunday night.

The man in the house, in his 40s, was woken by the men then assaulted and threatened.

They demanded he open the safe and made off with cash "totalling several thousand pounds", said police.

The men, who wore balaclavas, also stole his new grey Landrover car from the driveway.

'Subjected to violence'

Police searched the area and are reviewing CCTV and undertaking house to house inquiries.

The man was taken by ambulance to Whipps Cross Hospital with minor injuries, where he was treated and released.

Det Insp Kevin Shannon from Essex Police said: "I would appeal to anyone who has any information about these men to contact detectives as soon as possible.

"They subjected the man to totally unnecessary violence in the sanctuary of his own home."

Anyone with any information should contact Essex Police.
