A 40-year-old man has been sent to jail for the rape of a woman in Essex 16 years ago.

After a trial at Ipswich Crown Court, Peter Hull from Normandy Avenue, Colchester, was found guilty of the rape of a woman in her 30s in the town.

He was jailed by Judge John Devaux for six years, less 287 days.

A review of the case was undertaken in 2008 and DNA put on to the national database. A match was found when Hull was arrested for unrelated offences.

Det Ch Insp Godfrey O'Toole said: "Despite the passage of time, we are pleased that Peter Hull has finally had to face up to his appalling crime 16 years ago.

"His victim has had to relive the events of that evening and it has been a very difficult experience for her.

"We commend her for her bravery in facing her attacker in court and giving evidence.

"Peter Hull has been sentenced to a significant term of imprisonment and will have time to reflect upon the pain and distress he has caused his victim."

Hull will also be placed on the sex offenders register.
