Essex crash driver 'may have taken ill'

A man in his 80s who died in hospital following a three-vehicle crash in Essex earlier may have taken ill at the wheel, police have said.

The man's car crashed with a van and car travelling in the opposite direction on the A129 Rayleigh Road between Hutton and Billericay.

He and his female passenger, also in her 80s, were taken to hospital in Basildon where he later died.

Officers said it is thought he became ill while driving his Ford Focus.

A post mortem examination is due to take place to determine the cause of death.

The female driver of the van and male driver of a Hyundai car were shocked but otherwise uninjured.

The road was closed shortly after the crash, which happened at 1130 GMT, while police officers investigated the cause of the crash and traffic was diverted.
